What is mastering and why do you need it?

Song mastering is the final stage of audio post-production. It enhances the mix after it’s already been mixed and adds the final polish for maximum sound quality.

The mastered track is then exported in various formats for release on digital platforms and physical media.

What is classic mastering
The goal of classic mastering is to enhance the sound quality of the already mixed track and to prepare all necessary versions in accordance with the requirements of various platforms and media formats (digital platforms, vinyl, CD, radio, TV).

During mastering, a general analysis of the mix is conducted to address any issues in frequency spectrum, dynamics, and stereo imaging.

If the mix contains critical issues that cannot be fixed during mastering, these need to be corrected at the mixing stage, and the mix should be sent again for analysis.

After this, the track's loudness is increased to the maximum acceptable level for the genre—without introducing audible distortion.

Classic mastering has certain limitations compared to stem mastering.
What is stem mastering
Stem mastering is a type of mastering that allows processing not just the final stereo mix, but also its components — instrument groups (stems). These groups contain similar-sounding instruments (e.g., drums, vocals, guitars, keyboards, strings, etc.).

This approach lies somewhere between mixing and classic mastering: on the one hand, you can adjust specific groups independently; on the other, the balance within each group remains intact, preserving the overall sound concept established during mixing.

Thus, stem mastering provides greater possibilities for improving the sound and correcting mixing errors compared to classic mastering.
What is album mastering
The goal of album mastering is to bring all tracks to a cohesive sound, since they may have been recorded and mixed under different conditions and may sound inconsistent.

Unlike mastering a single track, album mastering involves working on each mix individually while maintaining the sonic concept of the entire album.

After mastering, each track sounds consistent with the others, without obvious differences in frequency balance, dynamics, or stereo width.
What is DJ set mastering
The goal of DJ set mastering is to bring all the tracks in your DJ set into a unified sonic picture, as they may have originally been produced and mixed under different conditions and therefore differ in sound quality.

Even if the tracks have already undergone individual mastering, within the context of a DJ set they can still vary in frequency balance, dynamics, loudness, and stereo width, which can create a sense of inconsistency during playback.

After DJ set mastering, each track will sound cohesive with the others, without noticeable differences in frequency spectrum, dynamics, or stereo image width.
